Big news: I'm writing for The Stranger.
Plus summer's last gasp: NFNRmini Sept 2. Plus, NYC, Tokyo, NW Film Forum, and Little Saigon Creative. <3
It’s true, and if you’re from or live in Seattle, you know, this is extremely exciting. For now, I’ll be doing one author interview per month about new books, books you have to read, authors you need to know, local, national, and international. My desire is to shout out ALL of the good books EVERY month, but I’m one human with two eyes, and we start slow, okay? Regardless, if you want me to consider your book, send me those advance reader copies! If I can’t get it in The Stranger, maybe we can pitch it elsewhere or print a little convo right here on this newsletter. The world is our oyster. I’m gay and I love oysters.
If you haven’t heard of The Stranger btw, please get acquainted with this precious source of Seattle local journalism that has survived the tyranny and destruction brought upon of local and independent press over the years. And if you don’t yet know the new editor-in-chief, Hannah Murphy Winter, I swear to gd, get to know them.
NFNRmini
Speaking of The Stranger, Nonfiction for No Reason is getting coverage there this September, so their Photo Director, the delightful and beloved Billie Winter (yes she’s married to Hannah), is coming to photograph the last NFNRmini of the summer. It’s gonna be a big one, so we’re taking pictures. Come out dressed cute and bring your friends. It’s FREE, the weather is still good, and I swear, these WRITERS on stage will blow you away. Look at them! We have poets, journalists, fiction writers, all within this foursome, and the VOICES are not to be missed. Have I ever lied to you?
It’s the weekend
And I have to run out the door to celebrate a pair of lesbian Gen X’s 20th wedding anniversary. Bless this sweet life.
Keep your eyes on that hot and fast Insta feed for more updates on Nonfiction for No Reason coming Oct 11 and Nov 1 in Seattle, Sept 12 in New York City AT LONG LAST, and we’re going again in <3 TOKYO <3 Nov 16.
Then we gotta talk about 2025. Can you believe? I cannot.
One last note.
Marcus Harrison Green is a generous and brilliant human, and a beating pulse in this city. He is a journalist, an essayist, a gorgeous storyteller, and he’s also the man behind Hinton Publishing, a BIPOC-owned and run Seattle-based maker of books. Speak the Sojourner is a way to read shorter works chosen by him and his editors from local writers with unique tales to tell. Speak the Sojourner is the reason NFNRmini happened this summer, and it’s been so wildly beautiful. If you enjoyed it, please subscribe to Speak the Sojourner. Ten dollars a month is a way to help keep Hinton thriving at a time when we know publishers of color are so fkg far from getting what they deserve. Speak the Sojourner is a way to stay in the loop on writers you just won’t necessarily find elsewhere, especially not in bigger publications, and it’s good. It’s really good.
Love y’all. See you at these readings.
Warmly,
Katie
